The Couch Project

The Couch Project is a collaborative initiative between Cardinia Men’s Shed and local VCAL students, aimed at upcycling furniture while building real-world skills. The project provides a hands-on, supportive space for young people to learn from Shed members while repurposing old furniture into something new and useful.

Learning Through Making

Over a 10-week program, students from Merinda Park and Living & Learning Pakenham took part in designing, restoring, and refinishing furniture pieces.

Shed members mentored the students through every stage, from sanding and painting to costing and marketing, giving them practical experience in both trade and business skills. It was a chance for students to learn by doing, while also working alongside positive male role models in a real workshop environment.

Connection Across Generations

At the heart of The Couch Project is intergenerational connection. The program paired seniors and young people to work toward a common goal, breaking down barriers and building mutual respect through teamwork and shared achievement.

Students not only gained technical skills but walked away with confidence, pride, and a deeper understanding of community. Their finished pieces were showcased to the public and even offered for sale, turning recycled furniture into valuable lessons and lasting impact.
