Bandicoot Boxes

Cardinia Men’s Shed contributed to local conservation efforts by building dozens of artificial shelters known as bandicoot boxes to support the protection and recovery of the Southern Brown Bandicoot (SBB). These structures provide essential cover in areas where natural habitat is limited or under threat from development.

Protecting Local Wildlife

The Southern Brown Bandicoot is a nationally threatened species, and habitat loss is one of its biggest challenges. To support ongoing conservation work, Cardinia Men’s Shed constructed a range of purpose-built bandicoot boxes based on approved environmental designs.

These shelters are now in use across multiple project sites to offer protection and encourage population recovery.

9 boxes for the Cannibal Creek Landcare Group
10 boxes for the Level Crossing Removal Project

Each structure was carefully built to specifications, helping support biodiversity and strengthen the Shed’s role in hands-on community and environmental projects.
